Scrapbooking 101: First Things First

The first page is a major challenge to some people and to others it comes quite easily. Here are a few tips to make your pages go easier! Each page doesn't have to be perfect. Every page doesn't have to be elaborate. Keep them simple to start, you can get more extravagant later on as you build your skills. Start slowly, don't buy too many supplies until you get started, they will overwhelm you. Remember why you are making an album. No matter what your personal reason is for making this album, it certainly shouldn't be stressful or too expensive for you.

The first thing you need to do is decide where you want to start with your photos. It may seem very overwhelming at first if you have lots of photos and they are not organized. Many recommend starting out with current photos, a roll of film you recently developed. Scrap those and then as time permits, start working backwards on older photos.

Another method might be to choose a theme for your album as a start, for example:

(1)Life album age birth to now for a particular person, perhaps just major events for that certain individual (birthdays, holidays, sporting activities, etc),

(2) Baby album

(3) Wedding album

(4) Christmas album

(5) Holiday album

(6) Vacation album

(7) ABC album

(8) Master Family album (usually chronologically done)

(9) Book of Me album

(10) Heritage Album

After choosing a few pictures of a single event. Pick out the best photos. Get rid of the blurry photos and the photos that do not help tell the story or do not show any one's face clearly. You should have 3-7 photos of the event. Many people recommend that you use odd numbers of photos on a page. See if you have one great photo that should be the focal point of the page. If so, consider that while you continue.
